Waiting Room
My mom had an appointment at the doctor's office, and I came along because we were out running errands together. My mom was called in by a nurse and I was left to wait for her in the waiting room.
I sat, with knitting needles in hands, earphones in, and content in my own little world, when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned to see a woman standing by my side.
She smiled at me and told me she’s been watching YouTube videos to learn how to knit a scarf, but they didn’t mention how to finish it, or “cast off” in knitting terms. She asked me if I could show her how. So, I did.
Now, you may be thinking…So what? Why is that so special?
This woman’s story is a rather touching one. She did not just randomly decide to learn to knit on a whim like I did. One of her girl friends just died recently and left her some yarn. The woman wanted to make something with the yarn to remember her friend by. So, she learned how to knit a scarf. How sweet is that!
I believe that our meeting was not merely by chance. She needed someone with more knitting experience and I was there to help her out. God could’ve had her find someone else to get help from, but he didn’t. I feel very blessed to have been given that opportunity to help someone.
Now, this story isn’t all about me and how blessed I was. It’s also about the woman. It’s so sad that her friend died, but I’m glad that she was able to make something to remember her friend by.
It reminded me to be thankful for what I have now…my family and friends. It also reminded me of the importance of making the most out of every day. Because you never know when your life as you know it will change or be gone.
You never know when God will give you an opportunity to help others, so be open to new experiences and always be ready to serve total strangers if God calls you to do so.
Even though I don’t know the woman’s name and probably won’t ever see her again, I’ll remember her story. I’ll always remember the woman I met in the waiting room.
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. - Galations 6:10
Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. - Ephesians 5:15-16
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. - 1 Peter 4:10
