Thanksgiving is here!

Thanksgiving is a holiday that is usually associated with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing...and football. But it's way more than that, as you probably already know. It's a holiday to remind us to be thankful for what we have and show love to all the people in our lives.

In my life, there are many things to be thankful for. My family, my friends, my church family, and above all, my God.

One of the things I am most thankful for currently is Scrooge: The Musical. I had the opportunity to perform in it and it was wonderful. To be honest, we were having a lot of issues with it and many of us thought it wouldn't turn out very well, but God really turned it around for us. He brought it together nicely.

The musical also effected our everyday lives in a positive way. For myself, it really brought me closer to everyone in my life. One of my new friends, Katie, has told me that before she started going to rehearsals for Scrooge, she didn't have any friends that really cared about her. She said that the people at Grace Church are so nice and friendly, and that really warmed my heart to hear that.

All-around, this play has done wonderful things from helping people meet new friends to helping audience members become closer to God. Although the play is done, I can thank God for all the wonderful memories and other good things that came from it.

There's a song from Scrooge called "Thank You Very Much" and it easily gets stuck in our heads, but it really helped the whole cast to remember to be thankful and stay positive.

If you're reading this right now, which, I suppose you are...Thank you very much for doing so!

Here's the song from Scrooge:

And one of my favorite songs by Josh Groban:

Lately, I've been feeling a little tense; Scrooge is coming up and Christmas isn't too far away.

It's a very busy time of year for most people and it's easy to get dragged down by all the stress. But, whether or not you're feeling tense, it's always good to have a good laugh. So, here's some funny videos for your enjoyment. I hope you like them!

Here's some classic Danny Kaye for ya:

And last, but not least:

Here's a joke I heard once that inspired the title to this post:

A guy goes to a psychiatrist; "Doc, I keep having these alternating recurring dreams. First I'm a teepee; then I'm a wigwam; then I'm a teepee; then I'm a wigwam. It's driving me crazy. What's wrong with me?" The doctor replies, "It's very simple. You're two tents."

Usually, the most exciting thing that happens in a clinic waiting room is someone sneezes. But that wasn’t the case for me a few weeks ago.

My mom had an appointment at the doctor's office, and I came along because we were out running errands together. My mom was called in by a nurse and I was left to wait for her in the waiting room.

I sat, with knitting needles in hands, earphones in, and content in my own little world, when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned to see a woman standing by my side.

She smiled at me and told me she’s been watching YouTube videos to learn how to knit a scarf, but they didn’t mention how to finish it, or “cast off” in knitting terms. She asked me if I could show her how. So, I did.

Now, you may be thinking…So what? Why is that so special?

This woman’s story is a rather touching one. She did not just randomly decide to learn to knit on a whim like I did. One of her girl friends just died recently and left her some yarn. The woman wanted to make something with the yarn to remember her friend by. So, she learned how to knit a scarf. How sweet is that!

I believe that our meeting was not merely by chance. She needed someone with more knitting experience and I was there to help her out. God could’ve had her find someone else to get help from, but he didn’t. I feel very blessed to have been given that opportunity to help someone.

Now, this story isn’t all about me and how blessed I was. It’s also about the woman. It’s so sad that her friend died, but I’m glad that she was able to make something to remember her friend by.

It reminded me to be thankful for what I have now…my family and friends. It also reminded me of the importance of making the most out of every day. Because you never know when your life as you know it will change or be gone.

You never know when God will give you an opportunity to help others, so be open to new experiences and always be ready to serve total strangers if God calls you to do so.

Even though I don’t know the woman’s name and probably won’t ever see her again, I’ll remember her story. I’ll always remember the woman I met in the waiting room.

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. - Galations 6:10
Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. - Ephesians 5:15-16
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. - 1 Peter 4:10

Since I was a little kid, I have loved to dance. One of the very first dance classes I took was Tap. Next to my classroom, there was a “balcony” area, from which my mom and I would usually watch my brother’s rock-climbing class. Usually, I brought a snack to eat after my class, while I was waiting for my brother, Aaron, to finish his class. One day, after I put on a bright pink Barbie skirt over my white tights, I slipped a little box of Nerdz candy in my little pink pocket as my snack for the day. When we got there, I bounded up the stairs. Having forgotten all about the candy in my pocket, I walked into the classroom, eager for the class to begin. The room was rather spacious, with mirrors covering two entire walls and a balancing bar on one side for the ballet class that used the room also. When everyone got there, the class began. I was tapping along with everyone else until the teacher noticed a peculiar shaking sound, perfectly in sync with the music. It wasn’t long before she found the source of the noise. It was my Nerdz. After discovering the candy, she politely asked me to put it somewhere else during class, so that it wouldn’t be a distraction. Little giggles could be heard across the room. At the time, it was incredibly embarrassing, but now it makes me laugh. It’s funny what some kids do.

(Author's note: this is a memory I have from when I was a little kid and I wrote about it for school awhile back. I finished it on Feb.7, 2011)

The tiger paced back and forth, Devising a plan to capture his prey. He approached the rock on which he had once seen an elephant below him. He thought it might be possible that the elephant had come back, but he doubted it. With small hope that it was a possibility, he slowly peeked over the ledge. There, in the middle of the long, narrow path, stood the pale gray elephant. Within a moment, the tiger got ready to pounce. Zing! He pounced on the elephant! Without warning, the elephant had no way to defend itself. It fell with great agony and despair! The tiger shredded it into pieces! He opened his mouth and showed off his sharp teeth and let out a roar of victory!

(Authors note: I wrote this several years ago for school. I was supposed to write about an animal hunting for food and this is what I came up with.)

On Thursdays, I babysit 6 kids at my church. When you think of 6 kids in a nursery, you might imagine them running around and being loud. These kids do that. Often.

One day, they were particularly wild. To try to keep them occupied, I played Ring Around The Rosy with them. We had lots of fun with that until Nathan, 9, the oldest of the bunch, asked if we could play a game. He suggested we play Mother, May I.

It sounded like a good idea and we were about ready to play, when it dawned on me...I forgot how to play Mother, May I. I played it all the time when I was little, but over the years (despite how few they were), the rules of the game got lost in my memories.

I asked Nathan how to play, despite how embarrassing it felt to ask a 9 year old for the rules to an easy game like that. As he was explaining, it seemed as if I was the student and he was the teacher. It seemed backwards.

I felt kinda bad because I thought I should have already known the rules. I thought I should be teaching him things, and never the other way around. But it doesn't always work that way with everything.

Everyone can learn from each other, no matter what their ages. In fact, it's a good thing that people forget things because then the kids can explain things and share their knowledge with others.

It's also good for adults and teens to share their knowledge and advice with kids because it broadens their field of knowledge and challenges them and distills curiosity in them.

I figured out that Mother, May I isn't exactly my specialty, but most kids are experts at it. It didn't end up being as embarrassing as I thought it was; I found it to be a gift...to see the confidence and fascination behind the bright eyes of a child.
